Isabella’s father died when she was 2 years old and it was Isabella’s mother Blanche who oversaw her education. Like her brothers, she studied Latin and became an expert in that language. At times she would even correct her chaplains whenever they made mistakes during church services. She also got a short religious education.
When still a child at court Isabelle was already devoted to religion. By the Papal bull of 26 May 1254, Pope Innocent allowed her to retain some Franciscan friars as her special confessors. She was devoted to Franciscan Order, than her royal Brother. She not only Broke off her engagement with a count, Hugh XI if Lusignan but moreover refused the hand of Conrad IV of Germany, son of Frederick II, Holy Roman Emperor, although pressed to accept him by everyone, even by Innocent IV, who however did not hesitate subsequently to praise her fixed determination to remain a virgin.
A patron saint of helping the sick and needy. Born March of 1225 and died February 23, 1270. Daughter of Louis VIII of France and Blanche of Castille. Sister of Saint Louis and Alphones of Toulouse, and Charles I of Sicily. Devoted her life to religion and to God’s Service.
OBSTACLES AND INFLUENCES~
She was forced to marry Conrad, the son of Emperor Frederick II, that her family chose for her. Since she refused to marry him, stories say that god punished her with long sickness. There was a rule that forced all women to become nuns at her time but she refused. She was influenced by God by believing in him and loving him.
She changed the rule that forced all the women to become nuns after long, hard work. She founded the covenant of the humility of the blessed virgin. Isabella helped the sick and poor by building charities. She had a powerful family, so she had the power to do what was right for everyone.
Sister of saint Louis and daughter of of King Louis VIII of France and Blanche of Castile, she refused the offers of marriage from several noble suitors to continue her life of virginity consecrated to God. She ministered to the sick and the poor, and after the death of her mother, founded the Franciscan Monastery of the humility of the Blessed virgin Mary at Long champs in Paris. She lived there in austerity but never became a nun and refused to become abbess. She died there on February 23, and her cult was approved in 1521.
WHY I CHOSE HER~
She was the patron saint of helping the sick and needy. She grew up in a wealthy loyal family. She devoted her life to god even though he punished her with sickness. I think that Saint Isabel of France is an incredible person, she has so much passion in her, she tries her best to make things right. She is really confident in what she does, and that is why I chose Saint Isabel of France to be my saint.
